There's another air quality alert in effect for most of the state of New York:

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT THURSDAY... THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION HAS ISSUED AN AIR QUALITY HEALTH ADVISORY FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES... DUTCHESS...ULSTER...COLUMBIA...GREENE...SCHOHARIE...ALBANY... RENSSELAER...SARATOGA...SCHENECTADY...WASHINGTON...FULTON... MONTGOMERY. AIR QUALITY LEVELS IN OUTDOOR AIR ARE PREDICTED TO BE GREATER THAN AN AIR QUALITY INDEX VALUE OF 100 FOR THE POLLUTANT OF OZONE. THE AIR QUALITY INDEX...OR AQI...WAS CREATED AS AN EASY WAY TO CORRELATE LEVELS OF DIFFERENT POLLUTANTS TO ONE SCALE. THE HIGHER THE AQI VALUE...THE GREATER THE HEALTH CONCERN. WHEN POLLUTION LEVELS ARE ELEVATED...THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH RECOMMENDS THAT INDIVIDUALS CONSIDER LIMITING STRENUOUS OUTDOOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. PEOPLE WHO MAY BE ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE TO THE EFFECTS OF ELEVATED LEVELS OF POLLUTANTS INCLUDE THE VERY YOUNG, AND THOSE WITH PRE-EXISTING RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SUCH AS ASTHMA OR HEART DISEASE. THOSE WITH SYMPTOMS SHOULD CONSIDER CONSULTING THEIR PERSONAL PHYSICIAN. A TOLL FREE AIR QUALITY HOTLINE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED SO NEW YORK RESIDENTS CAN STAY INFORMED ON THE AIR QUALITY SITUATION. THE TOLL FREE NUMBER IS: 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Smoggy days are here again

Looks like the entire state of New York -- and most of the Eastern seaboard -- is going to be extra-smoggy tomorrow. Check out AIRNow's map of current air-quality alerts in the U.S.

If you have asthma or lung disease, please take it easy out there tomorrow. The American Lung Association says the effect of ozone on tender pulmonary tissue is like getting a sunburn on your lungs.

You might want to stay indoors tomorrow afternoon

The Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality alert from Sullivan and Ulster counties from 1pm on Saturday to 1am on Sunday. Here's the text of the alert:  Read more

Sullivan County doesn't monitor air quality

According to the Mid-Hudson News, Sullivan County does not have equipment for monitoring either ozone or particulates in the air. And it's not alone:

In the Hudson Valley, most counties have ozone monitoring devices, but only Orange and Westchester have particle monitoring equipment.

Fortunately, it's not like leafy Sullivan County, and the Catskills region in general, are facing a massive industrialization of the rural landscape that could have tremendous impacts on air quality. (Oh. Right.)

Science 101: In order to measure the effects of an independent variable on a dependent variable, like gas drilling on air quality, you have to get baseline data. Without monitoring now, Sullivan County will have no way to measure the impact of drilling if and when it comes.
