The Catskill Conservation Corps, a partnership between the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, ask for acvolunteers to join as we rehabilitate this well used backcountry structure, scheduled for the week of November 9th through the 11th, at Echo Lake Leanto, in the Indian Head Wilderness from 8am to 4pm. The work will consist of installing a new roof, a new privy and stainging the leanto. The crew will meet each morning at the Meade’s Mt trailhead, in Shady, NY. The workshop is open to volunteers interested in helping repair, and rebuid the lean-to.
The Trail Conference’s Catskills Trail Crew is working to repair and replace many of the lean-tos in the Catskill Forest Perserve. The Echo Lake project is a great example of a lean-to that will be rehabilitated to extend the life of the backcountry shelter.
Volunteers should be sure to wear hiking boots; dress appropriately for the outdoor conditions and our trail building activities; pack plenty of water to stay hydrated; bring work gloves; and bring a bag lunch. The public is welcome to join us and you do not need to be a member of the Trail Conference to join the Trail Crew. No experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and the training on site before we get started. Participants should expect to hike, and carry tools 3 miles to the work site. There is an option for volunteers to camp, as the project will take place over the course of 3 days.
The Catskill Conservation Corps (Catskill CC) is a partnership between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, whose volunteers maintain a network of more than 2,000 miles of trails, including more than 200 miles in the Catskills. The Catskill CC aims to increase and support volunteer contributions on projects that protect natural resources and enhance outdoor recreation opportunities in the Catskill Mountains.
