The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.3 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.
The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire two (2) Watershed Maintainers for its newly created Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Preventative Maintenance Improvement Pilot (PIP) Team located at DEP’s facilities in Olivebridge, New York. From this location, the selected candidate will provide support across BWS’ Operations Directorate at facilities located east and west of the Hudson River. Under direct supervision, the Watershed Maintainer (WSM), using computerized, electronic and mechanical equipment will perform duties related to the operation, maintenance, repair and inspection of dams, aqueducts, facilities, vehicles, equipment, roads, bridges, lands and related systems of the City of New York in accordance with Department Rules and Regulations. Specifically, this position will be focused on the following duties, under the direct supervision of a lead technician, as they relate to the HVAC PIP Team:
• Maintain and repair plumbing, heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment contained within Agency facilities
• Operate, maintain, lubricate, clean, and repair equipment, such as but not limited to generators, pumps, motors, bearings, valves, fittings, meters, gauges, compressors, fixtures, filtration devices, etc.
• Remove, install, maintain and repair piping, valves and associated assemblies, as well as, drains and appurtenances
• Maintain written and computerized logs of operations, equipment performance and facilities maintenance
• Operate communication equipment such as computers, two-way radios, telephones, and mobile phones.
In addition, candidate may perform tasks related to general forestry work, carpentry and construction, service vehicles and equipment, operate and maintain water and wastewater conveyances and treatment equipment, install and maintain fixtures and gauges, requisition and store supplies and equipment, maintain inventory control, check security of structures, operate hand and power tools, vehicles and other motor powered equipment and will comply with all applicable environmental, health and safety rules and regulations. The Watershed Maintainer shall also provide valuable input in relation to the development of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program that will be integrated into a new Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Shift and/or weekend coverage may be required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:
1. One year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities; or
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:
2. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as: a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
Preferred Skills
Experience, education, knowledge, and/or certifications associated with the following:
• High and low pressure boilers
• Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to include applicable refrigerant certifications
• Building and process related mechanical systems
• Large and small scale piping, valves and associated operators
• Electrical instrumentation and controls in relation to HVAC and building mechanical systems
• OSHA or 10 or 30-hour certification and/or other relevant safety training.
• Knowledge of applicable building codes, as they relate to HVAC systems, mechanical and electrical applications, as well as building envelope design and indoor air quality.
