Armed kidnapping suspect arrested in Richmondville

State police report that a four-day crime spree that stretched from Saratoga Springs to Richmondville has come to an end, with the arrest of 36-year-old Saratoga Springs resident Nicholas P. Beer.

According to a release from the New York State Police, Beer was involved with several larcenies in Saratoga County, stole a box truck in Wilton, then returned to his home to collect his girlfriend and two young sons. When Beer's girlfriend refused to come with him, police say, Beer pointed a loaded .22 Marlin rifle at her and forced her to get in the truck.

With his family in tow, police say, Beer left Saratoga County on Monday morning, went south through Otsego County, and ended up in Schoharie County on Tuesday, May 15. State troopers responding to a suspicious vehicle complaint found the stolen truck parked near the Reinhardt Mini Mart in Richmondville. Beer was placed under arrest, and his girlfriend and sons were found unharmed in the back of the truck.  Read more

Gilboa dam sirens to be tested tomorrow

At 12:30pm on Wednesday, May 9, the Gilboa Dam alert sirens will be tested.

Regular tests of the system will be held on the second Wednesday of the month henceforth, the Times Journal reports.

The sirens, which were heavily damaged during flooding from Tropical Storm Irene last year, were finally repaired in April, to the tune of $220,000. The Schenectady Daily Gazette reports that in light of last year's catastrophic floods, Schoharie County is considering activating the sirens for flooding, not just the risk of dam failure:

[Schoharie County Emergency Management Director Colleen] Fullford said she expects county officials to discuss whether to revise the siren plan in place. Up until now, the public has been told that the sirens will be activated when the Gilboa Dam is at risk of imminent failure or when there’s an emergency that could result in dam failure.  Read more
