A guide to boating on the Catskills reservoirs

Boating on Catskills reservoirs in 5 Steps

The reservoirs hold drinking water for eight million people, and New York City's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is pretty obsessive about keeping them clean. So before you get out on the water, you'll have to jump through a few hoops. You have to have a permit and a steam-cleaned vessel processed by an authorized steam-cleaning vendor. Charlie Sanborn, proprietor of Cinder Track Bicycles, Livingston Manor, grew up in Orange County and moved to the Sullivan Cats specifically for the riding. “I live for this. For the hills. It's like flying a few feet from the ground -- the bike becomes part of you.”

Most budgets throughout the five-county Catskills region passed. A few were voted down, and will now have 30 days to revise their budgets and put them up for a second vote. If a school's budget is voted down twice, the school must adopt a contingency budget subject to strict caps.  Read more
