CANS & CLAMS FRIDAYS KICKING OFF MAY 24th!

Gearing up for another fun filled Cans & Clams series already.  Outside in our Summer Shack every Friday of May 24th-Aug 30st 6pm to 9pm!  Live music every week, $6.50 bags of clams, $3 cans of beers.  Enjoy the summer air, toss some shoes, listen to some tunes and eat some clams.  Also coming at you this season in Summershack and as specials in the restaurant and tavern is Andes BBQ Company featuring smoked ribs, brisket, housemade sausages and much more.  No reservations needed.  Just come on down!

Donate to the Binnekill Business Council Toys for Tots toy drive

The Binnekill Business Council (formerly ShopMargaretville) is organizing a toy drive to help re-stock the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation warehouse in Brooklyn, which lost 1,000 toys to Sandy floodwaters. Brand new toys are being accepted at locations across the Catskills beginning on November 17. Locations include the Bed and Bath Shoppe and the Commons in Margaretville, The Tinder Box and Wadler Brothers hardware store in Fleischmanns, the Andes Hotel in Andes, Quarltere's Nursery in Roxbury and NBT Bank in Grand Gorge.

Obituary: Daniel S. Friend, scientist, artist, and "most of all, a mensch"

Dan Friend (MD, 1933 - 2012) was a Renaissance man with a huge heart, spirit and intellect. He loved the beauty and poetry of life, nature, art and literature. He possessed wit and wisdom, was a country boy, a scholar, a Red Sox fan and, most of all, a mensch who was always warm and gracious. We will love and admire and miss him forever.

He was born November 20th, 1933 in Passaic, NJ to Russian born parents who had migrated to Passaic at the turn of the century. He attended Franklin Public School #3, Thomas Jefferson Middle school, and graduated from Passaic High School in 1952 as the last February graduating class in the United States.

 

After attending the University of Michigan for a semester, he volunteered for the US Army, and served in Korea 1953-55 where he rose to sergeant first class, operation sergeant, in the army corps of engineers 185th battalion, 8th army. He used the GI Bill to finish college at NYU as a pre-med student while majoring in literature and chemistry, then attended State University of New York Down State Medical Center. He did a two year pathology internship and residency at Boston City Hospital, and then continued his training as a fellow in anatomy with Don W. Fawcett at Harvard Medical School. In 1965 he took a second postdoctoral fellowship with Marilyn Farquhar at University of California at San Francisco Medical Center in the Department of Pathology.

An accomplished classical cellist, singer/songwriter and vocalist from Woodstock, NY, returns to the Andes Hotel with Keith Slattery on keyboard. Lindsey has performed all over the country with various different artists such as - 18 time grammy Award winning Jimmy Sturr Orchestra, Michael Dell Orchestra, Tommy Cash, Four Guys in Disguise, Mark Sly, Rupert Holmes to name a few.

Andes ‘Battle of the Bands’ – July 14, 2012

A Music Competition with Cash Prizes!!!

The Andes ‘Battle of the Bands’ will be held at the Andes outdoor fire pavilion on Tremperskill Road, at 2pm on July 14th. Admission is free.  BBQ & drinks available.

This is a competitive musical event for our youth, open to contestants ranging in age from teen to 25 years old. Prizes: 1st  $250,  2nd  $100,  3rd  $50.  Winners will be chosen by the audience, so come and ROOT for your favorites.

P2 and Avid Rox will perform! Gotta Band?  Want to perform? Gotta be a Band: Bands must consist of at least 2 members and 2 instruments. Entries must be made by June 30th and include name of band, names and ages of performers, and a contact telephone number.
