Esopus man arrested after hit-and-run crash into neighbor's house

Tip for not getting arrested after plowing a pickup truck into the side of a house: Don't park your truck down the block.

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office is reporting the arrest of 59-year-old Tom Beverley of Esopus on Thursday, after investigating an early-morning crash at 190 New Salem Road, in which a truck collided with a house hard enough to cause severe damage to the building.

Police report that they found Beverley's pickup truck parked at his home, just a few houses down the street at 208 New Salem Road, with pieces of the damaged house still embedded in the truck. From a Google search on the address, 208 New Salem Road appears to be an assisted-living facility called Hummel's Boarding Home.

A press release from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office reports:

The arrest of Tom Beverley, 59 years old of 208 New Salem Rd. Esopus, NY. Beverley was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief in the third degree - reckless property and leaving the scene of a property damage automobile accident.

Deputies responded to 190 New Salem Road for a report of a vehicle having struck the residence. Upon arrival Deputies discovered that during the evening of January 11th/early morning 12th an unknown vehicle had left the roadway then struck the north side of the residence causing severe structural damage to the dwelling. The operator then fled the area in the vehicle leaving debris throughout the front yard of the residence. Deputies then conducted a neighborhood canvas of the area...finding a red Chevrolet P/U truck parked at 208 New Salem Rd. with damage matching that of the nature of accident. Upon further investigation pieces of the dwelling were found to be embedded into the vehicles tailgate, rear bumper and drivers side rear quarter panel. Investigations conclude that Beverley, while backing down New Salem Road at an unsafe speed lost control of his 1991 Chevrolet P/U veered off the northbound shoulder of the roadway and then struck the victims residence.

The defendant was taken into custody and then later released on appearance tickets to appear before the Town of Esopus court February 29th at 4pm.
